of caterpillars, moths and sucking eggs...

Let me introduce - the Io Moth.

Why is it called Io Moth when it's not a moth?
The green thing (in the pic) that is the caterpillar,
will one day cocoon itself and evolve into a moth.

Are we having some science lesson here???
Since when did Daphne take an interest in insects?

Since yesterday... -_-

After being stung, believe me...
any other oblivious person would take a heck of an interest too.

Ok, I'm only 99.99% sure that it's this brand of caterpillar/moth that stung me.

The fluffy looking thing surrounding it, is totally not nice to the touch please.

On closer look, the hairy fluff are actually thorny spikes.
FILLED with venom la...

Are you already thinking :

"Daphne...you kuku, why did you go and touch it?!?!"
"Don't you know Mother Nature painted neon colors on them to warn us of DANGER?!?!"

Please hor!
I'm afraid of insects, especially flying cockroaches, beetles and squirmy things.
I WON'T VOLUNTEER MY HAND TO TOUCH OK!!

*sigh*
Anyway, the story's like this.
My class finished and I was re-arranging my stuff.
My bag got wet being on the floor and so I decided to put it on a tanning chair.

The freaking chair had so much seeds/dirt from the palm tree above,
so I pushed it halfway on the side to dust them off.

After all the dusting,
I lifted the handle bar to put the chair back down.
That's when I felt this rough patch under the handle bar,
I thought that the handle bar had rusted, so immediately went to wash my hands at the poolside fountain.

There was no sign of rust and then suddenly the pain was so intense,
it's like my 2 fingers (middle and 4th finger) were on fire!
Then I checked under the arm rest...
saw a fat green hairy caterpillar crawling about.

Only 1 word came to mind.
$#!T!!!

Desperately trying to recall all the first aid things that I've learned but
could not remember anything.
Adoi!
Really suck eggs.

So cancelled my last lesson and rushed home
while flinging my right hand vigorously every 3 secs.
It felt like the pain was slightly relieved when I did that.

Luckily my dad was home and he asked me to dip my fingers in vinegar
while waiting for the clinic to open.
He kept telling me that it's ok and that he experienced it before.
(a hairy caterpillar dropped from the tree onto his neck while he was working.)
That it will be better after a while.
But of course at that time I don't believe him la.
I thought my fingers were goners.
Going to turn black and drop off.

Every time the swollen area came into contact with something new,
like when I washed with water then change to vinegar...
it felt like a million teeny-weeny needles pricking my skin.
(And under the circumstances, I could still think, 'oh this is what it's going to feel like getting a tattoo...')

I could literally feel the tiny holes there and the numbness that comes and goes.
At one point my whole hand felt numb,
I don't know if it's because I was in shock or the poison spreading la.
This is one of those times where a vampire boyfriend would come in handy.
(to suck the venom out of coz...)

Even Dr. Sun who saw me said I'm suay(unlucky).
I mean who would check the under side of chair handles before lifting?!!

So,
what to do?
if you happen to be unlucky like me...

Treatment of a caterpillar sting:
from here
  • Place a piece of tape over the sting site and pull it off - don't jerk it off. Do this several times using a different piece of tape each time.
  • Wash the area thoroughly with warm soapy water.
  • An antihistamine can be taken by mouth. A corticosteroid cream can be applied to the area surrounding the sting. (which I am on now...)
  • The very young, elderly or persons with comprised health prior to the stings are more likely to have a severe reaction.

Here's a link to a semi-horror story about a doggy
who attempted to eat a certain kind of poisonous caterpillar.

You know,
The pesky bugger that stung me.
Will grow into this moth.

When I was younger,
my grandma told me that I should not kill any moths that come and hang out in the house.
It could be the spirit of my great grandaunt, great grandpa etc.
inhabiting the moth, coming back to visit us.
Is this considered a myth, old wives tale?
Well, in my childish mind,
I thought that the bigger the moth, the older & dead-er the person.

And I still half believe it up till now.
If I see a big moth at home, I'm like,
'Pls don't visit me la.'

That reminds me...
I should take down my angsty and very rude status on Facebook,
and one should not be spewing vulgarities at potential dead relatives.

I didn't know that some moths can be so beautiful.

Do your homework.

See you next week.
